Maintenance-free tank monitoring for all liquids
The fiber optic level measurement systems from Opsens Solutions are based on pressure measurement using white light interferometry technology.
The WaterSens solution for monitoring liquid levels can be used in almost any environment and delivers reliable results for decades. The “plug & forget” design means that the sensors can be operated permanently, without regular maintenance and servicing.
The measuring principle is simple: the liquid level is calculated from the hydrostatic pressure, which corresponds to the pressure exerted by the height of the liquid due to gravity. This pressure is determined using a patented technology based on Fabry-Pérot optical interferometry. This technology, known as WLPI (White Light Polarization Interferometry), is based on the phase modulation of light, the most sensitive method for fibre optic measurements.

Opsens OPP-C series
Fiber optic level sensor
Hydrostatic pressure measurement with optical sensors enables precise long-term monitoring of liquid levels.
The sensors are extremely robust and stable as well as immune to electromagnetic interference and lightning strikes. They are drift-free and require no maintenance during their decades-long service life - a decisive advantage for sensors that are often used in places that are difficult to access.
In combination with a simple stand-alone power supply system with solar panel and battery, the measuring system can also be used in remote locations where a power supply from the mains is not possible.
The configurable WaterSens solution can be easily automated for variable rate measurements and offers multiple communication interfaces for remote data transmission tools, from Wi-Fi to satellite antenna.
Applications:
- Dam/dike instrumentation
- Flood protection system
- Groundwater monitoring
- Wastewater management
- Corrosive liquids such as leaching processes
- LNG & fuel tanks

Opsens OPP-GD
Level sensor for fuel tanks and ATEX environments
By measuring the hydrostatic pressure and thanks to Opsens Solutions' optical differential sensor, it is possible to measure fuel levels in tanks with an accuracy of better than ± 1 mm, with absolute safety.
Based on the WaterSens solution, which uses fiber optic pressure sensors from Opsens Solutions to measure water levels, the OPP-GD sensors, specially developed and adapted for fuel tanks, offer extremely accurate, reliable and safe measurement. The sensors have no drift over time and require no maintenance or calibration - a true “plug and forget” system.
As this technology is completely dielectric, the sensors are intrinsically safe and can be used in potentially explosive environments (ATEX). The sensor is located outside the liquid container and is intrinsically safe (according to IEC 60079-28).
This measurement solution is so reliable that it will be used in the next generation of aircraft to measure critical parameters such as fuel level.
Applications:
- LNG tank instrumentation
- Level measurement in storage tanks
- Compatible with all types of explosive liquids (fuel oil, LNG, hydrogen...)
- Level measurement of aviation fuel
