Surface-metrology

Brochure surface metrology for manufacturing
Surface quality in the micrometer and sub-micrometer range plays a key role in the lifecycle of metal products. Particularly for functional surfaces, compliance with tolerances is crucial to ensuring the subsequent products’ reliability and durability, even at the raw materials production stage.
Surface measurement systems from Polytec offer you contactless measurement results with micrometer and nanometer resolution that can be reproduced at any time for precisely this purpose. While you can use the TopSens models to analyze roughness in 2D parameters, you can use the TopMap range to detect form deviation and to characterize surfaces using parameters such as flatness, ripple and parallelism even in 3D. The 2D data is evaluated in line with DIN ISO 4287 / 4288, while the 3D data is evaluated acoording to DIN ISO 25178.
Measuring form deviation and roughness without contact
The surface quality of raw products is crucial to guaranteeing that products will work perfectly later on. Metallic implants in dentistry, for instance, require a particularly low level of roughness. In contrast, many raw products depend on a particular level of roughness for subsequent painting and coating processes. Some applications even call for concurrent information about form deviation and roughness.
The TopMap models from Polytec allow you to firstly determine form deviations with nanometer resolution and a large measurement volume even on large areas, and then to measure the roughness in a small area. While you conduct areal analyses with the models in the TopMap series, you determine roughness in a mainly linear way with the TopSens systems. You can characterize the surface, calculate the volume and characterize peaks and troughs with distance parameters.

Improve texture on raw materials
Powerful production technology for surface treatment very much depends on defined tribological properties, right down to its raw materials. Texturing is a must, particularly when wear properties, lubrication or the bearing load of product surfaces needs to be subsequently optimized. Information about micrometer and nanometer resolution is crucially important to characterize the texture and to improve the methods and thus ultimately the products such as combustion engines or transmission components.
Depending on your individual requirements, Polytec offers a variety of instruments to characterize the surface structure even during the raw materials manufacturing process. Measure the exact roughness with the TopMap µ.Lab.
