PSV-400-3D Scanning Vibrometer - Applications

Engineers can use Polytec’s PSV-400-3D scanning vibrometer to quickly and easily measure the real vibration characteristics of prototypes and preproduction products. These measurements help refine and adjust the model narrowing the difference between predicted and the experimentally measured outputs and building confidence in the model for future predictions.

Car Body Structural Dynamics Testing

The PSV-400-3D proves to be very well suited for data acquisition for structural dynamics tests on car bodies. The main advantages as compared to conventional accelerometers are

  • Significant decrease of test time (the full car body example has 3000 points measured within 2 days)
  • Higher point density allows more precise results
  • Measurements exactly at coordinates of FE-model possible by geometry import
  • No alteration of structure (no change of mass or stiffness) and therefore easier and better FEM-correlation
  • Ease of setup (no cabling or labeling); no error checking of cabling; no moving of accelerometers and dummy masses
  • Software easy to learn and system easy to use
  • Lower maintenance costs - only one transducer to recalibrate

Sound Field Generated by a Squealing Brake

The purpose of a brake is to attenuate effectively and evenly the kinetic energy of a vehicle. Under certain operating parameters, during the braking process, high frequency vibrations of the brake disk can be excited. These significant structural vibrations of the brake, which do not have any influence on the actual braking effect, are heard as an undesired, acoustically perceptible squealing of brakes.

The image shows the brake sound field measured with a PSV-400-3D Scanning Vibrometer.

3-D Vibration Modes of Brake Disks

Optimizing automotive noise behavior is an important aspect in new vehicle designs. Using Polytec's innovative measurement technology,  researchers have managed to track down the causes of undesired noises when braking. They could clearly characterize the interactions between brake pads and brake disks which are responsible for the squealing brakes.

The investigations showed that, with certain combinations of operating parameters, such as brake pressure, temperature and instantaneous velocity, an interaction between in-plane and out-of-plane natural vibrations causes the dreaded squealing noise. The knowledge gained using the PSV-400-3D Scanning Vibrometer puts the engineers in a position in the future to reduce the risk of undesired squealing of brakes even further when constructing the brakes, through careful choice of the component geometry and material parameters.

3-D Motions in Violins

Polytec joined forces with East Carolina University and two highly respected violin makers to study the 3-dimensional vibration response of three old Italian master violins using the Polytec PSV-400-3D scanning system. Some of the secrets that make these violins masterpieces might be revealed from this research and allow modern violin making to approach the level these masterpieces achieved hundreds of years ago.
