PSV-400-3D Scanning Vibrometer - RoboVib Station

RoboVib Structural Test Station

Full Body Optical Vibration Mapping – fully automated

The idea of creating an automated measurement station for dimensional objects took hold of Polytec engineers. Encouraged by their industrial partner seeking a substantial reduction in processing time for experimental modal analysis (EMA), the automated RoboVib Structural Test Station was developed.

RoboVib Demo Video

The RoboVib Video shows the operation of the RoboVib Structural Test Station step by step. It demonstrates how complex geometries can be measured quickly and easily, and how the results can be integrated in the engineering workflow.

RoboVib - The Smart Link

A three-dimensional Scanning Laser-Doppler Vibrometer (PSV-400-3D) is used as a measurement tool, linked mechanically and by software to an industrial robot from KUKA. This intelligent link enables for the first time an EMA test to be fully embedded in the CAE data workflow. A Finite Element Model supplies the measurement locations, which are then matched to the actual object under test. Fully automated, the measurement runs overnight with thousands of measurement points if required. As the results are acquired at the actual nodal points of the FE mesh, the update and validation of the FE model by means of the experimental data is now straight forward. High-resolution measurements - in both frequency and space - can be performed in hours instead of days, as the point density is not dependant on time-consuming sensor mounting and cabling. Besides increased efficiency, the results are no longer influenced by mass and damping effects of attached sensors. This has again a positive effect on FE model validation.

Flexibility was the aim in developing the RoboVib Structural Test Station. Adding a linear axis to the robot, or adding more robots, creates a test cell exactly fitted to application needs. The vibrational characteristic of a complete car body can be mapped in only a few hours - including set-up time!

Robotic laser vibrometry is the key to quick and accurate results in structural dynamics and NVH, accelerating development and guaranteeing short time to market.

Features and Benefits

RoboVib Structural Test Station is based on the PSV-400-3D 3-dimensional Scanning Laser Vibrometer. To find out more about the specific capabilities of non-contact full field vibration measurement please refer to the PSV-400-3D Feature page.

The RoboVib came into life just because of one reason:

To save time and money in the development process

Using solely contact transducers is time consuming because of

  • defining and marking measurement points
  • mounting hundreds of sensors
  • cabling
  • checking for cross wiring
  • dismantling
  • sensor calibration

and doing the same thing after each modification of a prototype or sample

RoboVib is different and overcomes these time killers by its unique features

  • Simply uses exisiting geometry data from a coarsened Finite Element Model for measurement point definition - no double data handling
  • No sensor mounting for visible parts - less then 1 hour for a complete car body measurement setup
  • RoboVib Software controls robots and scanning process - Fully automated after setup
  • High point density in short time - perfect FE model update
  • No supervision during scan - night shift can be used for scanning
  • RoboVib be clustered by using additional robots or linear stages - gain flexibility
  • Results given at nodal points of FE mesh - direct interface to post processing in modal analysis packages such as ME'scope

Integration in CAE workflow

What is the goal in today's data handling? The goal is to work with the same data thoughout the complete simulation and test procdure.

The RoboVib Software is designed to accept directly coarsened FE geometries to create the measurement locations.

The procedure of a modal test with RoboVib works always with a consistent data model:

  • Importing measurement point from FE
  • Teaching robot positions
  • Determine object position
  • Postion Robot
  • Move, scan and measure
  • Stitch scanned sections to common data model
  • Analysze data
  • Export to modal analysis or post processing
  • reimport to FE for model update

All steps are integrated and controlled by the software package of RoboVib

Your benefit: All measurement data at exactly the point definded in the FE simulation

Applications

RoboVib is versatile and flexible. The first time an automated measurement station for complex vibration analysis tasks was created. It allows measurments on parts as small as an electronic box to structure sizes as big as a complete car body of a modern SUV.

Automotive:

  • Modal analysis
  • NVH tests
  • component testing

Aerospace

  • component testing on composit materials
  • modal analyis
  • acoustical tests

General structural engineering and acoustics

  • Structural optimization
  • Sound source identification
